Brief Information about the Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine is one of the four active faculties at Afghan International University and consists of the following four departments:
- Department of Public Health (PhD)
- Department of Medical Sciences – Microbiology (Master’s)
- Department of Medical Laboratory Technology (Master’s)
- Department of Nursing (Master’s)
Vision
The Faculty of Medicine of Afghan International Islamic University aims to emerge as a nationally and internationally recognized advanced and standard medical educational and research center in healthcare, treatment, protection, and care.
Mission
The Faculty of Medicine of Afghan International Islamic University provides a suitable environment for standard teaching and research at the master’s level to train specialized, committed, and ethical professionals.
Objectives
- To enhance academic capacity at the master’s level in the field of medicine.
- To continuously promote modern medical education.
- To improve the capacity of professional personnel for hospital standardization.
Organizational Structure
Currently, the Faculty of Medicine has four active departments. Each department has four academic staff members, and this structure will gradually expand. Alongside internal staff, four foreign professors with PhD degrees are engaged in teaching, research, and practical activities.
Active Programs
At present, three academic programs are active:
- PhD in Public Health
- Master’s in Microbiology
- Master’s in Medical Laboratory Technology
The PhD program in Microbiology is planned to begin next year. The medium of instruction, examinations, and research in all programs is exclusively English.
Curriculum
The curricula of these programs are designed according to international standards, developed through three official workshops, and approved by the Ministry of Higher Education. With the presence of foreign professional professors, the curricula have been further revised and fully endorsed.
Practical Work and Research
The faculty currently has an advanced internal laboratory equipped with modern tools, which is being further developed. In addition, a new laboratory is under construction in the faculty hospital, which will serve as a center for education, clinical training, and research. Through research and investigation, this center aims to address the challenges of modern healthcare in Afghan society. This initiative will be recorded in history as one of the lasting achievements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
Students
Currently, the faculty has 100 students:
- 10 enrolled in the PhD in Public Health
- 90 enrolled in the Master’s programs in Microbiology and Medical Laboratory Technology
Teaching Hospital
In accordance with the strategic and developmental plans of the Ministry of Higher Education and Afghan International Islamic University, a teaching hospital is necessary to ensure quality and practical training for master’s and PhD students.
At present, the faculty has a three-story hospital building equipped with electricity, water, air-conditioning systems, laboratories, and advanced facilities. The building also has a spacious parking area and green surroundings.
Although additional staff, medical equipment, and an operational budget are required, efforts are ongoing to make the hospital functional, serving both academic purposes and public healthcare. The faculty, with the support of university leadership, is committed to activating the hospital and providing opportunities for research, practical training, and essential medical services to the people. Current efforts are focused on establishing cardiology and heart surgery units, which are being led by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, who is a professional cardiac surgeon at the national level.
